MARATHONISI ISLAND - NESTING GROUND FOR CARETTA CARETTA TURTLES ON THE
GREEK ISLAND OF ZAKYNTHOS
While
my Energyia guests are with me here in
Zakynthos on an Energyia Holistic
holiday fitness retreat holiday I make every effort to ensure they get
a trip to the island of Marathonisi in Laganas bay.
This is a nesting area of the Caretta-Caretta turtle. Even the island has the shape of a turtle!
Once joined with the Marathias cape 1 mile away, Marathonissi also includes two small islands
called the Pontikonisia. The vegetation is thick with pine-trees and the
green oak trees. There are two beaches on Marathonissi. The island's shape resembles a turtle and
it is also a nesting area for the Caretta Caretta turtles which is why it
is affectionately known as Turtle Island.

There are two main beaches on Marathonisi,
one is where the turtles lay their eggs in the soft golden sand and the
other beach is pebbly with two coves nearby which are fun to discover and
explore. Marathonisi can be reached from either Laganas beach or Keri Lake
by hiring a boat.
The islet has a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal waters which
unfolds in sea. The islet is part of the National Marine Park.
On the one side there is the beach with golden sand where the
turtle Caretta Caretta lay their eggs while on the second you will find a
beach with pebbles and two small sea caves which you can visit. In order
to reach Marathonissi you can hire a boat from Keri Lake or Laganas bay.

A number of boat trips in Zante include a
fantastic catamaran trip. I arrange the trip by request to help you enjoy the more remote locations of the National Marine
Park in Zakynthos, and in particular to spot the Carretta carretta turtles
at sea.
Marathonisi is a small islet - a nesting ground for Caretta Caretta turtles.

The island has a superb sandy beach perfect for
sunbathing and swimming in the surrounding clear warm waters. Many people
like to hire boat to reach Marathonisi, or alternatively there are
organised boat trips available. A favourite spot for scuba divers, this
island has much to offer and should not be missed.
